Longleaf and splash pine were previously harvested in this region. The terrain was also utilized for grazing, hunting, and the fabrication of naval supplies. There are several recreational activities at Lake George State Forest. Fishing, picnics, and a three-quarter-mile interpretive nature walk are all available at Bluffton Recreation Area. The park does not have a boat ramp, but it does have a bank launch for canoes and Jon boats. Jenkins Pond offers fishing and rustic camping to those who have a valid permit.
